THE 5 SUFFERINGS OF LIFE

01

Birth Is a Suffering?

Suffering starts from the very first breath. The moment a child leaves the womb, the cycle of desire begins.

Due to the cycle of rebirth, we spend nine months in the mother's womb and the child always leaves the womb crying. The child faces trouble breathing. He/she needs oxygen. The intake of air is the first stage in the desire, the cycle of desires now starts: followed by milk, food, and water and it continues to build with time. All throughout life, the cycle of want/desires continues to ask for more. Hence the 'Suffering begins at birth'. Hence — Birth is a Suffering

Ageing Is a Suffering?

We crave for youth while time moves forward. Suffering is our refusal to accept the reality of getting old.

When the child grows to a teenager and then to an adult, one starts realizing he is Aging fast. Soon, one observes his hair is greying and realizes he is getting old and starts feeling miserable about it, he never wants to become old. This is the cause; we mostly want something which is not possible. Even after knowing the fact that he is ageing, and this is a Fact of Life, but we never want to accept the reality. One craves for remaining young hence the suffering continues. Hence — Ageing is a Suffering

Sickness Is a Suffering?

When the body deteriorates, we feel miserable. Suffering is seeking a healthy body that is no longer available.

One or the other kind of illness starts in the life. There is weakness, the joints pain, we have diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure or any other disease. Whichever ailment one has, we all think 'this is the worst disease' there is none as bad as this. Because we have experienced that disease. One doesn't want to accept the fact that the body also deteriorates with the age, one will get old and may go through diseases as the body gets old. But still, one craves to remain young and having healthy body always. But that is not possible. The meaning of Suffering is 'seeking which is not available.' Hence — Sickness is a Suffering

Losing Loved Ones Is a Suffering?

The separation with anyone we love leaves a sadness in our lives. Whether it is due to misunderstanding, distance, or death — human nature struggles to accept these occurrences.

The separation with anyone we love leaves a sadness in our lives. Such separation may be due to any misunderstanding between individuals or due to people living in different geographies or due to death. The human nature is 'Not accepting the bad occurrences of life.'

The realization comes only when one accepts the reality. Once we accept the reality, then only objectivity comes and our mind starts to realize the truth. We also feel that more attachment we have with each other, the more we suffer due to separation. It is also a function of our expectations from the person we love, more the expectation more the suffering on separation.

We as a human, we start building expectations from the time when the would-be child (son or a daughter) is conceived. We start building our expectations for and from the would-be child. These expectations keep growing with the passage of time. Due to any reason, when these expectations are not met, our so-called heart is broken, and we suffer. The death of the loved one is in any case very painful. Hence loosing loved ones is a suffering. Hence — Losing Loved Ones is a Suffering

Not Getting What One Wants Is a Suffering?

Nothing in life is permanent. We suffer because we lose balance when things don't happen according to our wants.

Since childhood one aspires to become someone (A child looks at his surroundings and he says I will be a doctor or a Pilot or a…….) The parents also encourage the child to dream. Even as we grow & become adult, we want to get lots of money, attain success, wanting a perfect and comfortable lifestyle. When one achieves this, he becomes very joyful & he works very hard for getting more and more and more. But the moment he loses it he becomes miserable.

We have heard that nothing is permanent, but we always feel that the good times we have is permanent. The law of the nature is "Nothing in life is permanent." We humans want good time to be permanent and want the bad times to go away quickly. When it doesn't happen the way we want, we lose the balance of our mind. We suffer because of things not happening according to our wants. Hence — Not Getting What We Want is a Suffering

You have seen 5 sufferings.

BUT WHERE DO THEY ALL COME FROM? It is caused due to the craving and attachment to our desires.

Desire for Sensual Pleasure

Craving comfort, taste, beauty — pleasures mistaken for permanent happiness.

Desire to Become

The drive to be wealthier, more powerful, more respected — a destination that never arrives.

Desire to Get Rid Of

Wanting pain, problems, people to disappear. The resistance itself becomes the suffering.

SUFFERING — A COMMON PHENOMENON

Suffering is a common feeling we all humans go through. Every living being on this planet has a big or small suffering everywhere. Even when we are irritated it is suffering. Human beings have suffered in the past, are suffering currently and they will suffer in future. Suffering is common for all, including the privileged ones and the under privileged ones.

The Universal Truth

From the BIRTH TILL DEATH, we all human beings are in one of five sufferings (not less than five nor more than five) except when we are in DEEP SLEEP. Even when we are sleeping and having a dream-state, our dreams are also having one of these five sufferings.

Please write to SACH if you think you know of a SIXTH suffering. We request you to test your past & current thoughts or even the thoughts you have about the future with one of these five sufferings stated here, you will realize that your current situation is also having one of the five sufferings or is a result of one of these five sufferings.

These five are: Birth is a suffering, ageing is a suffering, sickness is a suffering, disassociation from the loved one is a suffering, not to get what one wants or gets what you don't want is suffering.

Letter from your Sarthi
